How Artificial Turf Installation Seattle Is Carried Out

By Alexandra Anderson

Synthetic grass comes with a number of benefits, one being that it is guaranteed to remain green even in the worst of droughts. It has also been a lifesaver for many places where its natural counterparts cannot grow, such as in certain types of soil, places with many trees and so on. The material first came to the public's attention in the sixties, when the so called artificial turf installation Seattle was installed in a newly built sporting facility.

It is loved for its low maintenance, ability to maintain its looks even when in dry seasons and so on. The laying out of faux grass starts with preparation and measurement of the site. All organic material, such as grass, leaves, bark and roots are removed; if left, they will decompose and damage the whole structure.

Sewer line repair or replacement, checking of gas lines and underground electric cabling and anything else that involves digging up the site should be done at this stage, as should repair of driveways, gazebos, patios and other surface structures. All that may be extremely difficult or impossible to do once the faux lawn is laid out.

Base materials will then be laid on top of this fabric. These may be crushed granite, road base, decomposed aggregate and so on. The amount and type to be used will depend on the nature of local soil conditions. Soil that drains water well and is stable will require about eight centimeters in depth of these materials, while more miry ground will need even twice that.

The crushed granite, aggregate or whatever is used as base is spread and made level with special tools, then compacted. The latter step is especially critical to ensure the durability and stability of the structure. The tools and equipment used for compaction will depend on the topography and size of the area. A water filled landscape roller is used on steeper slopes, while a large, wide area is better served by a powered compactor.

The outer edges are compacted manually using hand tampers. After that, the grass itself is laid out; this comes in rolled sheets reminiscent of a carpet. The unrolling and fluffing out is done using power tools. One should be careful to use only material that comes from one batch and maker to avoid unsightly color variations.

The ground is now ready for the grass; this is normally supplied in rolls that look like carpeting. Since the blades will have been crushed flat, the material is first fluffed out by brushing against the grain. It is then laid out with power tools. Care should be taken to order from one manufacturer and from the same batch to avoid unsightly variations in color.

The edges are then trimmed by hand, then infill is applied with a drop spreader. The material may be natural silica sand, coated granules or crumbled rubber products, and is used to hold up the blades and weight down the structure. Rakes, brooms and power brushes are then used to work the filler material deep into the grass. A few fibers may look taller than normal; these are trimmed by hand. For any artificial turf installation Seattle city authorities will then require a contractor to clean up the site once the job is complete.
