Physical Fitness For Seniors: How To Remain Physically Fit

By Tom Manfredi

Because people are now living longer, healthier lives there has been increased concern about physical fitness for seniors. Since there are so many older people who want to live active lives, they are now looking for exercise advice specifically for them. With some help and a few tips older people can stay fit and continue to live healthy lifestyles.

The first thing older people need to realize is that their bodies have different needs than they did twenty years ago. This means it is not a good idea to attempt the same exercise routine that they did in their youth. Joints, bones and muscles start to break down over time which means there can be high risk of injury if the person tries to do too much, especially in the beginning.

Checking with a physician is always a good idea before starting a new exercise routine, and this is especially true for older people. Each person should speak to a doctor to find out if they have any conditions or problems that could make exercise dangerous. They can also give advice about changes to diet that can compliment any routine.

It is a good idea for older people to take their time when choosing a work out routine. There are a number of options, from going to the gym, joining a swim class or working out at home. The most important thing in any work out is that it is done regularly, so older people need to pick a program that they know they can do on a regular basis.

A good way to help maximize results is to make both short and long term goals. The short term goals will keep the person engaged and allow them to see the progress they are making. Long term goals give people something to aim for. There may be an activity that is too difficult in the beginning, but could be accomplished over time. Setting goals will help people achieve those long term results.

Having a good support system is crucial to success in any work out, which is why older people should always try to find themselves a group or at least a partner. Exercising in a group or with another person is a great way to stay motivated. This is especially true on the days when an older person is just not feeling well, or does not want to exercise. A partner or group can help inspire them to continue.

When older people are working out they should try to keep in constant motion. Even small movements help burn calories and increase muscle so even if they are moving slowly they should make sure that the movement is constant. Older people should also not be too hard on themselves if things do not start off well and should reward themselves for any type of achievement, which will help them stay motivated.

There has never been more information available regarding physical fitness for seniors. The internet can be a valuable tool for helping to locate different sources. E-books and other online texts can be a great source of information regarding health. Keeping a good attitude and following this advice will help older people achieve their fitness goals.
