Teaching Young Children Self Reliance

By Rosalind Estes

The virtue of independence is something that is somehow not present in all people. This is actually one of the main reasons why some countries are not as successful as others. Simply because the idea of self reliance is not embedded in all the minds of the people of these countries.

Most parents do not think that this is a really big deal because it does not really affect the children. However, if it is not taught, then it will create a great impact on them in the long run. So it is best to start slowly at when they are small.

It is natural that parents do everything for their children and give them whatever they want when they are still very small. However, as they start to grow older, start teaching them to do certain things on their own like getting their own milk or food. Also do not give them everything that they want anymore and explain to them why they cannot have it. This will give them the drive to carve their own way of doing things.

This is the way it should be. However, some families do the opposite. The children grow up with their parents doing what everything for them and giving them whatever they want. This is counterproductive because instead of teaching the kids to work hard and be independent, it teaches them to be lazy and to always rely on others to do the work for them.

The connection between being lazy and independence is actually very clear. To simply put, if a person does not think he can do something, he will not attempt to do it and more often than not, ask others to do it for him. So it can be said that independent people are the ones who are hard working.

As one can see, self reliance is something very important to teach children when they are still very small. If they grow up knowing that they have solid strengths and abilities, then they will be able to know how to utilize it well in the future. This will make sure that they have a successful life.
