Will Running Help You Drop Pounds?

By Randall Cox

Many people run to burn off their fat. It is an excellent form of exercise in many ways, but is it actually effective when your aim is to reduce your weight?

The answer lies in what else you do. If you take up running without changing anything else in your life, then yes you probably would lose weight. But in some cases you might not, just because muscle weighs more than fat. Don't expect a drop in your weight if you are getting rid of your body fat but toning your muscles. You will get slimmer, though.

People who run to lose weight tend to increase their caloric intake to make up for the ones that are lost during the exercise. Since the margins are so small, this is an easy mistake.

A person with average weight will burn off a hundred calories in a mile-long run. A glass of orange juice can give you back that hundred calories. That's why you should be very particular about what you consume if you really want to lose weight by running.

Another point to keep in mind is that we need to burn off around 3500 calories to lose one pound of weight. So that 150 pound person would need to run 35 miles a week to lose one pound a week, if they did not make any changes to their diet.

From all of this you can see that it is important to focus on diet as well as running to lose weight. Keep a food journal so that you can see how much you actually eat. You can see the caloric equivalents on line.

That would involve weighing your food, but this can really be effective. You'll find yourself eating less without even making an effort do so because of all the recording. You'll think twice before snacking on another cookie.

This can also be used for keeping track of your money. Write down everything you spend and you will be surprised how you suddenly start spending less!

You have to run regularly in order to lose weight. Running twice a week will not affect your weight at all. You should exercise regularly, like at least thrice a week.

Having said all of that, running is certainly great exercise. You can lose weight with it if you have a proper diet. Running also boosts your metabolism and your ability to burn more calories. Of course, it can be stressful on the heart, so if you are not very fit it is best to have your doctor check you out before you start running to lose weight.
