You have the capability to transform a terrible day

By Debra Stangl

How does one change things around when you are having an appalling day? Scientists, psychological specialists , as well as alternative thinkers are demonstrating continually the perils of staying in an irritated mood (raised cortisol, elevated blood pressure, extra work needed by the heart and nerve system) and the importance of what the Institute of HeartMath calls "staying in coherence".

2 days gone all sorts of things were going on and I felt funky and gunky. I determined to just leave the office (fortunately I did not have any appointments or sessions) and I went home and told myself, "Debra, you know how to pull yourself out of this". It worked, and I ended up having a wonderful day, so I wanted to share a few of these ideas with you.

1) Breathe. Go somewhere (your auto or lavatory) and take some really deep breaths. Target your heart and feel as if the breath is coming from your heart. After 10 deep breaths, you'll be surprised how much better you feel.

2) Wring you Hands. This sounds a little crazy, it works. If you are upset, particularly if you're irritated, actually wring your hands! This is based upon Chinese medicine - the energy meridians all meet in the hands so wringing them actually moves the energy. This is the one which truly worked for me yesterday.

3) Have a good cry! A good cry will release suppressed emotions. (Just do not do it in the middle of a crucial meeting).

4) Blast those tunes. Find your best pump up music and blast it in the car. Dance or sing at the very top of your lungs. Moving your body moves your energy.

5) Think about something that makes you happy, like your youngsters, your dog, your kitty or the last superb holiday you took. Close your peepers and get that vision and think about it.

6) Be grateful that it's not worse. Almost all of what throws me off in the daytime is not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things. Isn't it true that many people in the world have it far worse off than you? As speedily as possible , go into gratitude for everything glorious in your life.

Here's some good things worth doing to prevent bad days from going down in the first place:

1) Get enough sleep. So many studies out there are showing what a huge difference sleep makes for us, not only physically, but mentally, emotionally and spiritually. How many hours do you need? 8? 7? 6? You know what your number is, so make the decision to make that happen.

2) Take a little time to take care of you. Relax a bit. Make yourself a hot bubble bath and add a little aromatherapy with the relaxing scent of lavender. Or come up with some other straightforward thing that feels mouth-watering to you.

3) As Scarlett O'Hara would say, "Tomorrow is another day". As you drop off, remind yourself of that, and set your objectives for a wonderful day tomorrow.

4) Wake up on the right side of the bed. Before you get up and hit the shower, shut your eyes and repeat "this will be a great day" three times. The key is believing it when you are saying it!

5) Realize we are spiritual beings and maybe it is time to reconnect with your spirituality.

Print this list and keep it with you in some place where it'll be available to you when you are beginning to feel yourself slide.

Have you got things which you do to help in making a shift when you are having an appalling day?
