Pay Attention Once You Start Noticing Facial Redness

By Nia Lawrence

You wake up one morning and checked your face in the mirror when you notice something weird. You almost didn't recognize your face out of all the redness you see on the reflection. As you peeked closely, you see your blood vessels, swollen and seemingly on the brink of bursting. This facial redness is not your ordinary redness. Rather, it's an indication of a more severe condition that doctors and skin specialists refer to as rosacea. Nonetheless, this condition is curable.

The fact is blushing, which is a common redness of the face, is the result of rosacea. The redness would start on your nose and spread out towards your cheeks, forehead, and chin. You start noticing the unusual redness on your skin because rosacea causes the blood vessels in your face to expand or swell. Aside from that, you would notice the formation of small red bumps on your nose. Due to the inflammation of your blood vessels, facial redness occurs, making you feel a burning sensation on your skin since it has gotten sensitive.

Of course, this redness of the face is due to other reasons, too. For instance, after a rigorous exercise session, you would notice minor redness of your face. This is because of the increased flow of blood to different parts of your body. If you drink too much alcohol, you could also suffer from this, as 'blood sludging' could obstruct the blood flow. The blood vessels can also suffer badly when you feel strong emotions. These factors may bring on and worsen rosacea.

So now, how do you treat this redness of the face? Topical ointments can actually treat rosacea. As much as possible, you should apply the ointments on your skin once a day. These ointments are normally antibiotics that treat facial redness by subduing the inflammation of the blood vessels. If the topical medications don't work, a person suffering from rosacea may be prescribed with oral antibiotics like Tetracycline, Minocycline, and Erythromycin. If these still don't work and the redness persists, your doctor may suggest other treatments.

For severe redness that can't be treated with oral or topical medicines, surgery seems to be the best option. Of course, there is a less intrusive way to treat rosacea and this is through laser surgery. Another treatment for rosacea is dermabrasion. Nevertheless, this treatment is done only when there's overabundance of the red bumps mentioned earlier. Finally, you can treat facial redness through cryosurgery where the swollen reddened skin tissue is frozen using liquid nitrogen. Just remember to consult your doctor right away as soon as you notice an unusual redness on your face so he can prescribe the best treatment.
