Plastic Surgeons and How to Vet Them Out

By Tim Knowles

Going under the knife is no joke. So you might as well do a thorough research in your area for plastic surgeons. Referrals from friends and doctors you know would be very welcome but if you can't get any, here are some pointers to help you find someone who will do a great job.

* Check the American Society of Plastic Surgeons website. Here you'll find a list of board certified plastic surgeons, along with their specialty. Locating one for your particular need will be very easy. For example, you want something done on your face, just look for a certified facial plastic surgeon.
* Do a research on the surgeons you want to include in your shortlist via the Medical Board of your state. Here you will find, if any, complaints or malpractices lodged against them. If their medical license has been restricted or held; or if their privileges to perform surgery at any hospital have been revoked. If a big group of doctors at a noted hospital does not a particular doctor to practice there, you wouldn't want him on your list.

Next, review before and after plastic surgery pictures on their web site, or at their office. Although it is good to see many before and after pictures on their web sites, some plastic surgeons don't show all their pictures on their web site, because of privacy restraints.

This next step is a must! Meet the doctor, and not just his "aesthetic consultant" who speaks with a fancy accent! Does the cosmetic surgeon spend time with you and go over your questions or concerns. Does the plastic surgeon understand what you want, rather than what he wants? Is he or she able to demonstrate to you before and after pictures of other cases similar to you? Is the plastic surgeon honest with you in describing limitations, shortfalls, or even complications that he might have had on similar cases? Be sure to meet with several doctors, and follow your gut, as it is typically correct.

Always bear in mind that no matter how great a plastic surgeon is, he can't do surgery in a virtual world. Equally important are the credentials,

Always bear in mind that no matter how great a plastic surgeon is, he can't do surgery in a virtual world. Equally important are the credentials, skills and experience of an anesthesiologist whose duty is to keep you alive during surgery. Many patients do not know that some centers don't even use an anesthesiologist, nor the basic monitoring equipment. A great looking office is no guarantee you'll have your surgery done at an accredited and certified surgery center. Personally, I'd rather not have surgery at all if the facility is not accredited by AAAHC, AAAASF or Medicare; or if they don't use a board certificated anesthesiologist.
